Social Media Algorithms: Draining Us of Our Free Will

Writer's picture: S BS B

I've been thinking a lot lately about how we use social media. Have you ever felt stuck in a scrolling vortex, losing track of time? It turns out, you're not alone. Even tech giants like Jack Dorsey (co-founder of Twitter) and Elon Musk are worried about this.

Here's the thing: social media algorithms might be subtly influencing our choices. Imagine opening your favourite app and seeing exactly what you crave – funny memes, cute animal videos, the latest news. That's the algorithm in action! It analyses your past behaviour to curate a personalized feed, keeping you glued to the screen.

These algorithms are designed for engagement, not necessarily enlightenment. They show us content likely to trigger a reaction, positive or negative. Sure, sometimes it's fantastic – we discover interesting things! But other times, we feel compelled to keep scrolling, even when we know we should stop. The algorithm is just that good at grabbing our attention.

Let's delve deeper into how these algorithms work. Imagine a carefully crafted digital puppeteer, constantly analysing your clicks and likes. It uses this intel to curate a personalized show, filled with content guaranteed to keep you glued. Sometimes, it's a delightful discovery – a hilarious meme or a fascinating article. But this positive reinforcement can turn insidious. We get hooked on that dopamine rush, making it harder to resist the urge to scroll, even when we know we should step away.

This isn't just speculation. Tech titans like Elon Musk share similar concerns. These platforms can subtly manipulate us. By constantly feeding us content that aligns with our existing views, we become less likely to challenge them. We get stuck in an echo chamber, passively accepting information without critical thinking. It's like being on intellectual autopilot.

This resonates with my own experiences. How often do we mindlessly scroll, the initial purpose for checking our phone long forgotten? Time melts away, leaving us feeling like passengers in our own actions. This isn't an isolated experience; countless users share this struggle.

So, what can we do to combat the allure of these endless scroll sessions? Awareness is the first step. Understanding that algorithms prioritize engagement over everything else empowers us to be more mindful consumers of social media. Setting boundaries is key – designate specific times or durations for social media use and stick to them!

Secondly, let's diversify our information diet. Algorithms curate content that reinforces existing beliefs, creating echo chambers. To counteract this, actively seek out diverse viewpoints and news sources. This exposes us to a broader range of perspectives, fostering a more well-rounded understanding of the world.

The concerns raised by Dorsey and Musk are a wake-up call. We shouldn't abandon social media entirely, but rather strive for a healthier relationship with it. By implementing these strategies, we can reclaim control and ensure social media serves us, not the other way around. Our free will is precious, and protecting it allows us to make conscious choices, not autopilot reactions. Let's take a stand and ensure social media becomes a tool for connection and exploration, not a cage for our attention.
